An Apology for What Was Printed

I request all who are angry with me on the Account of printing things they don't like, calmly to consider these following Particulars
1. That the Opinions of Men are almost as various as their Faces; an Observation general enough to become a common Proverb, So many Men so many Minds.
2. That the Business of Printing has chiefly to do with Men's Opinions; most things that are printed tending to promote some, or oppose others.
3. That hence arises the peculiar Unhappiness of that Business, which other Callings are no way liable to; they who follow Printing being scarce able to do any thing in their way of getting a Living, which shall not probably give Offence to some, and perhaps to many; whereas the Smith, the Shoemaker, the Carpenter, or the Man of any other Trade, may work indifferently for People of all Persuasions, without offending any of them: and the merchant may buy and sell with Jews, Turks, Heretics, and Infidels of all sorts, and get money by every one of them, without giving Offence to the most orthodox, of any sort; or suffering the least Censure or Ill-will on the Account from any Man whatever.
4. That it is as unreasonable in any one Man or Set of Men to expect to be pleased with every thing that is printed, as to think that nobody ought to be pleased but themselves.
5. Printers are educated in the Belief, that when Men differ in Opinion, both Sides ought equally to have the Advantage of being heard by the Publick; and that when Truth and Error have fair Play, the former is always an overmatch for the latter: Hence they cheerfully serve all contending Writers that pay them well, without regarding on which side they are of the Question in Dispute.
6. Being thus continually employed in serving all Parties, Printers naturally acquire a vast Unconcernedness as to the right or wrong Opinions contained in what they print; regarding it only as the Matter of their daily labor: They print things full of Spleen and Animosity, with the utmost Calmness and Indifference, and without the least Ill-will to the Persons reflected on; who nevertheless unjustly think the Printer as much their Enemy as the Author, and join both together in their resentment.
7. That it is unreasonable to imagine Printers approve of every thing they print, and to censure them on any particular thing accordingly; since in the way of their Business they print such great variety of things opposite and contradictory. It is likewise as unreasonable what some assert, That Printers ought not to print any Thing but what they approve; since if all of that Business should make such a Resolution, and abide by it, an End would thereby be put to Free Writing, and the World would afterwards have nothing to read but what happened to be the Opinions of Printers.
8. That if all Printers were determined not to print any thing till they were sure it would offend no body, there would be very little printed.
9. That if they sometimes print vicious or silly things not worth reading, it may not be because the People are so viciously and corruptly educated that good things are not encouraged. I have known a very numerous Impression of Robin Hood's Songs go off in this Province at 2 shillings per Book, in less than a Twelvemonth; when a small Quantity of David's Psalms (an excellent Version) have lain upon my Hands above twice the Time.
10. That notwithstanding what might be urged in behalf of a Man's being allowed to do in the Way of his Business whatever he is paid for, yet Printers do continually discourage the Printing of great Numbers of bad things, and stifle them in the Birth. I my self have constantly refused to print any thing that might countenance Vice, or promote Immortality; though by complying in such Cases with the corrupt Taste of the Majority, I might have got much Money. I have also always refused to print such things as might do real Injury to any Person, how much soever I have been solicited, and tempted with Offers of great Pay; and how much soever I have by refusing got the Ill-will of those who would have employed me. I have heretofore fallen under the Resentment of large Bodies of Men, for refusing absolutely to print any of their Party or Personal Reflections. In this Manner I have made my self many Enemies, and the constant Fatigue of denying is almost insupportable. But the Publick being unacquainted with all this, whenever the poor Printer happens either through Ignorance or much Persuasion, to do any thing that is generally thought worthy of Blame, he meets with no more Friendship....

First Amendment Dead in Buffalo?

Evidently FREE PRESS, the First Amendment to our Constitution and the Bill of Rights are not welcomed by a few choice people in Buffalo, Oklahoma.
More importantly, it appears that printing the truth and an opinion is allowed everywhere in this Country but not in Buffalo Oklahoma.

For those of you who may have forgotten why it is that you are allowed to move about freely, speak freely and share your infinite knowledge and wisdom while sitting around the coffee table first thing in the morning, the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights is printed below.

It appears that those who take umbrage at the facts are conspiring to eliminate this publication and web-site.

A senior hospital administrator personally chastised one of our advertisers threatening to cease doing business with the advertiser if they continued promoting their business in Inside Buffalo Magazine. One can only assume this person is unhappy that the deal with the Town of Buffalo over the doctor’s clinic was made public.

Another business person was told by a regular customer that they will not be doing business with them again.

We digress - For the Record...
We're not against a doctor nor are we against the hospital.
BUT - We are for forthrightness and for sharing a point-counterpoint view. Every story or incident has two sides. Inside Buffalo will usually take the opposite side to get people thinking. And we're accomplishing that goal.
If you're reading this then you are thinking! Share your opinion in places other than at the local round table discussion or at the cafe'. It takes GUTS to print the facts, the truth, and to put one's opinion in writing. Especially when it's against a community leader's view or against those who are in charge of a public trust.
The fact is Inside Buffalo's editorial staff is for the new doctor!
The doctor has shared a discussion or two with many of us and is extremely likable. We also have no objections whatsoever to a new clinic, just not the way it was done and handled.
There wouldn't have been offers by private residents, more than just those listed in the article below, who stepped forward offering to assist the hospital with private funding for a clinic if it wasn't what is considered a 'good thing' for Buffalo. We are, however, totally against the way it was handled and the lack of openness.

Buffalo's Economic Development Director said everyone (reiterated twice) he's spoken with is for the bailout of the hospital. He was asked, have these 'everyone' people ever had a chance at hearing the other side, the dissenting opinion? He acknowledge that they most likely had not. The question is, then... Would these people be so solidly behind the Town's decision if they had heard the other side of the story, the dissenting view? And... have these people ever been afforded the opportunity to hear the other side or another opinion on the matter? The question is not rhetorical and you know the answer.
All the population of the U.S. would be Republican if it weren't for the "other sides", the Democrats or Independents. Everyone would be wearing black colored clothing if it weren't for the other colors availabe as a choice.
Simply put - give these people the opportunity to hear all of the story, including a dissenting view and allow them to make their decision for or against a Town Board decision based on real facts.

Bill of Rights

Discrimination?

Mr. Bob Slayton recently purchased some property in the Town of Buffalo, Oklahoma with hopes of moving his family to the quaint Town and taking up residence. He scoped out the local commercial real estate market and purchased a building which would soon be his retail location for a new, "old time mercantile store". Mr. Slayton had promised the Town of Buffalo that he would be hiring 12 employees which would bring an impact of at least $300,000.00 to the Town of Buffalo in payroll paid to employees over the next year and countless revenue in the form of taxes; sales, property and personal taxes.

Mr. Slayton began a diligent effort at deconstruction, tearing out walls, demolishing portions of the building, opening up spaces and just simply working hard at making something of the 1920’s era structure. .

When it came time for Mr. Slayton to be rid of the pile of debris left over from the demolition, he contacted the Town Manager of Buffalo and inquired as to what was required to get rid of the large amount of junk remaining from his efforts. He was informed that there was nothing the Town could do. Mr. Slayton was told that it was his responsibility to find a company to haul the debris and to dump it, advising Mr. Slayton that the nearest landfill was in Mooreland.

The Town Manager told him that he’d really like to help but that if he did help Mr. Slayton, he’d be forced to help every guy or company every time they needed junk hauled away. So Mr. Slayton took it upon himself to contact the different companies around Northwest Oklahoma having anything to do with refuse hauling and dumping. After days of telephone calls he found one company willing to assist him. Two large truck loads later and astounding costs and fees paid to both the garbage Company and landfill, Mr. Slayton had finally gotten rid of the remaining demolition debris.

There was a time when Mr. Slayton was in the process of remodeling his building and he was in need of a tool necessary for demolition. He asked the Town Manager if he could rent or borrow one. The answer was no, because the Town didn’t have such a tool, but if it did the answer was still no. You see, Mr. Slayton was advised, if the Town were to lend or rent you a tool then the Town would have to lend or rent anyone at any time a tool whenever a need arose. Sorry, Mr. Slayton, “I can’t help you, but here’s a flyer for a company that has the tool you are looking for on sale” and the Town Manager handed Mr. Slayton the aforementioned flyer. “Your best bet” Mr. Slayton was told, “is to buy one for yourself”. “Oh, and if you do, let us know because there may be an occasion where we could use such a tool. And! maybe we could borrow or rent it from you when necessary”, the manager said. Yeah right, Mr. Slayton thought to himself as he exited City Hall.

Mr. Slayton went on to employee over 20 persons in the Town of Buffalo and did just as he had promised. Now Mr. Slayton has found out that the Town of Buffalo just recently allowed the Dollar General Store Company to dump approximately 60-80 tons of debris FOR FREE at what was once a Town landfill. Only to cost the Town of Buffalo $10-12,000.00 to be rid of the junk and move it to where Mr Slayton was advised is the nearest landfill, Mooreland. Mr. Slayton isn't all too happy right now. Can you blame him?

Mr. Slayton would like to know why Dollar General wasn’t told: “Sorry Mr. Dollar (or Mr. General) The Town of Buffalo can’t help you with all that refuse from your torn down building, you’ll have to find a company to haul it and find a place to dump it. By the way, there’s a landfill in Mooreland. Sorry we can’t help you because if we did that, then we’d have to help every man or Company who needed to dump junk at any time and we just can’t do that.

Inside Buffalo has suggested to Mr. Slayton that it looks like a clear and distinct case of discrimination. What the Town of Buffalo did for Dollar General they should also do for Mr. Slayton or anyone else.

Discrimination? Mr. Slayton might consider consulting an attorney.

The foregoing actually happened. The quotes are exact. Only the name and storyline were changed.
